According to polling specialist, the Conservative Party's "death knell" was sounded long before the UK election.
The Conservative Party, which has ruled the United Kingdom for 14 years, appears to be on the verge of a historic political defeat on July 4.
In the final days before the election, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has attempted to put up a brave front by claiming that the outcome was not a "forgone conclusion" despite his party's dismal performance in the polls, which indicate a resounding victory for the opposition Labour Party.
Political observers generally concur that there was little Sunak could have done to undo the significant harm caused by previous presidents in recent years, even if there will undoubtedly be a reckoning following the election and some deep introspection about where things went wrong.
One of the most respected pollsters in the United Kingdom, John Curtice, attributed the party's downfall to two catastrophic incidents that occurred in recent years. In the final moments before voting, Curtice said to CNBC, "This is not an election about the ideological position of the parties, this is an election about competence."
"The Conservatives were dealt a bad hand, but they played it badly, which is why we are where we are."
According to Curtice, the party's demise was sparked by "Partygate," the admission that officials violated social gathering laws during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the brief Liz Truss administration in 2022, whose disastrous economic policies created market panic.
