Our driver informed us that there are days when traffic is so heavy that it is impossible to move. Driving tourists up and down the lake to see the renowned mountain views and 19th-century mansions like Villa del Balbianello—where portions of "Casino Royale" and "Star Wars: Episode II" were filmed—is his source of income.
He feels lucky to be a boat driver and feels sorry for the poor tourists who rent automobiles or struggle to locate the illusive cab.
"On certain days, it can take an hour to travel 10 kilometers, or roughly 6 miles," he stated, adding that the narrow two-lane roads are unable to accommodate both the increasing volume of traffic and the larger vehicles that are being constructed. "Everyone has to wait because traffic in many towns can only flow in one direction," he remarked.
